LLC020: Shooting at Sunset at Atwater Brewery

This week in adventures with Dylan, we learn some good stuff about shooting in shade white balance and dialing it back in editing, the sweet, sweet goodness of shooting at sunset in a room with giant windows, and maneuvering around terrible backgrounds.

I’m glad to see you’ve stuck around with the photography stuff, and you’ll learn more about improving your own photo game with this episode as well.

My Personal Notes:

  • Great natural light, two walls were floor to ceiling windows
  • Room was pretty ordinary, back wall had projector screen pulled down, extra bags of supplies piled up, extra chairs and a ladder stored there
    • Had to shoot around it a bit to keep shots clean
  • Got a tip from Taylor Jackson that he shoots in shade white balance to help keep warm skin tones so tried that
    • Can always change white balance to whatever in editing, but if you start quite warm and dial it back, you’ll tend to keep it warm anyway
    • Turned out pretty nice for me, especially since the sun set during the event and that light came through the windows
    • Ended up with good skin tones and warm glow feeling to the photos
  • There was a pizza buffet so stood at the end of the table, put camera in live view and got good portrait shots of tasty pizza and people chatting and taking their slices
    • Had lots of different foods and with the excellent light had delicious shots
    • Detail shots of individual plates, and groups of food and drinks with people behind, and shots of people holding food or drinks and laughing/smiling
  • Mostly I stand back and let people have fun while I take photos, some pics I want to get are so close to people that I asked to take the pic of them or their food/drink whatever
  • The group played music trivia bingo, had to guess the song, mark it on your bingo card, get five in a row and you win
    • The MC for the game was dynamic and really fun, did some dances during the songs, got some fun shots of that
    • Had to be ready and quick on the trigger to get those shots

My tip of the week is to follow Taylor Jackson on YouTube. He’s super chill, has some great full wedding videos where you see his settings and what he’s thinking, and really funny music videos in a series to see if he can break into the music industry.
